About Dr. Varma
Dr. Varma specializes in glaucoma surgery, performing a full spectrum of complex as well as newer minimally invasive procedures. In addition to routine and refractive cataract surgery, he has particular expertise in high-risk cataracts, the repair of complications from cataract surgery and reconstruction of the front portion of the eye.
In 2010, Dr. Varma joined the Prism Eye Institute, where he is now Managing Director of the Prism Group. Prism is a large multidisciplinary eye care provider serving over 200,000 patients each year across five sites in the Greater Toronto Area. He is also Executive Vice President of Clinical Ophthalmology for Vision Group, a Canadian company that provides clinical, laser, and surgical eye care in over 65 locations across Canada and the United States.
Dr. Varma has developed collaborative care models at Prism and has himself served over 100,000 patients, performed over 15,000 surgeries, and over 30,000 laser procedures. Dr. Varma operates at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, Kensington Eye Institute in Toronto, and at the Prism/TLC surgery center in Oakville.
Dr. Varma is a Preceptor for Glaucoma and Advanced Segment Surgery Fellowship at the University of Toronto. He is also an Undergraduate Ophthalmology Coordinator at the Mississauga Academy of Medicine, University of Toronto. He is the founder and served four years as chairman of the Emerging Leaders Program for Ophthalmologists at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. He also co-chaired Canadian Opthalmologic Society Annual Meeting Cataract Program between 2016–2019.
Dr. Varma has special interests in angle closure glaucoma, intraocular lens technology, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery techniques. He has published over twenty peer reviewed articles and forty scientific publications. He has delivered over 100 invited lectures.
